I guess all photographers are very different and very the same. Most love their cameras and to a degree I’m the same. However, what I really love in photography, is what I feel. It excites me to take photographs that were created from a feeling, especially when it happens suddenly, by chance. When it happens by chance is where the magic lives.
When I photograph people and it’s not a commercial shoot, I want that same feeling, that same by chance emotion. I want the eyes to speak. the expression to ask questions of the viewer. I want the model to shout silence so that the viewer is haunted by the need for why.
Light and shade are equally important. But…the hair out of place, the litter on the ground, the stranger in the background can be as important.
I took this at the Castel Sant ‘Angelo in Rome in a dark medieval stairway that leads to the top of the Castle.
I’ve always loved the idea of a photograph freezing time for eternity and in this shot I wanted the woman on the stairs to never quite reach the light on the floor cast by the sun from above… but I wanted to have enough of her to make the viewer want her to be there. I hope it works.
